2009 Tree Planting Workshops
have been scheduled for February. Don’t miss this opportunity to
attend! The workshops will cover subjects such as: ordering
trees, planting trees, spacing, which species to use, soil types, weed
control, and
other related subjects. Two dates to choose from, select the
workshop that fits your schedule and location. All participants
will receive a packet of information containing the latest tree planting
information and forest industry bulletins. |

Living Snow Fences are plantings
that create a vegetative barrier that traps and controls blowing and
drifting snow, reducing the need to shovel and plow. Check out the

Take a look at how three
urban homeowners in the Elkhart River Watershed have utilized a
cost-share program. Applications for financial assistance (up to
75% cost-coverage) are being accepted for both
urban and
rural areas in the Elkhart
River Watershed to install approved stormwater management practices.

2009 Regional Master Gardener Training
has been scheduled.
Areas of training include plant science, plant nutrition, and soils;
insects, plant disease, and weeds; vegetable gardening, herbs, and roses;
annual and perennial flowers; tree care and identification; house plants
and lawn care.

“Family Forest Owners of the United States” (pdf file) is a recently
released USDA Forest Service report that summarizes results from the
National Woodland Owner Survey of the estimated 10 million family forest
owners who own 264 million acres (35 percent) of forest land in the
United States. The report provides useful information about U.S.
family forest owners and their forest uses, management practices,

2008 - 2014 Long
Range Area Plan (pdf) ~ Wood-Land-Lakes RC&D Council spent some time
this past year updating our long range area plan. This plan will
help guide the Council for the next seven years. The plan shows
the Council's Mission, Vision, Background, and Council Structure, as
well as an overview of the area. This overview includes
geographic, natural resource, agriculture, demographic, and
socioeconomic information and graphs.
The Council's goals, objectives, and strategies revolve around land
conservation, water management, community development, and land
management. Wood-Land-Lakes RC&D projects are focused in these
four main areas.

Indiana HomeTown
Competitiveness (IHTC) ~ A multi-sponsored tool to assist Indiana
rural communities accomplish their economic and community development
goals is accepting applications from local communities.
The pillars of this program will help communities focus on:
~ Mobilizing local leaders and building
community civic capacity
~
Energizing local entrepreneurs to build strong economies
~Capturing
wealth transfer to raise development dollars
~Attracting
young people to strengthen community demographics
This program has a proven record of helping smaller and more rural
communities build significantly stronger and more sustainable
development. The sponsors have committed their various resources
to help communities initiate, implement, and sustain the activities
associated with these four pillars.
